CHILD Magazine Includes MMC's Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in Top 25

(January 22, 2003) — Maine children and their families can feel confident that when hospital care is called for, one of the best children's hospitals is right here, close to home. Child magazine has conducted its second exclusive survey to identify the top children's hospitals in the country. The comprehensive survey—whose results appear in the February 2003 issue of the magazine, now on newsstands nationwide—was based on strict criteria and data compiled during the magazine's extensive nine-month investigation. The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center (MMC) appears on the list at number 20.

"We have been a nationally accredited children's hospital only since 1998," says Paul Stern, MD, Chief, Department of Pediatrics at MMC, "so this is a great accomplishment for us. It provides external validation of our quality. We benefit from the quality of the 'mother ship,' Maine Medical Center. The Child ranking reflects the excellence of our environment of care, of nurses, doctors, child life staff, social workers, and everyone who cares for children here. It also reflects our range of programs, from those enhancing the health of children in our community to our tertiary care programs and our excellent training programs."

"More than 8 million children seek care at pediatric institutions every year, and parents want to know where the best possible care is available," says Miriam Arond, Child magazine's editor in chief. "In order to identify these top children's hospitals, we followed a comprehensive and rigorous methodology and examined criteria such as survival rates, staff qualifications, child life programs, safety issues, and much more."

To be considered for the Child magazine survey, a hospital must be among the 100 full members of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. Child magazine narrowed the field to 54, based on each hospital's evaluation by the Joint Commission,an agency that visits each hospital and grades on medication use, anesthesia care, infection control, and more. All of the semi-finalists then received a detailed 72-question survey developed in conjunction with a team of advisers engaged especially for this story.
