MaineHealth Launches Food Fight for National Nutrition Month

PORTLAND, Maine — March 24, 2016 – Broccoli, beets, and blueberries are just a few of the fruits and veggies starring in a Food Fight that’s been under way across the MaineHealth system this month.

Hundreds of employees and community members from across the MaineHealth system of 12 hospitals and healthcare organizations submitted their healthiest, tastiest recipes featuring a variety of different local fruits and vegetables. From these submissions, a panel at each organization selected the top two recipes based on creativity, originality, and of course, nutrition.

To determine the winning recipe at each organization, the food service teams at each hospital prepared the top two recipes and hosted taste tests in their cafeterias. Similar to the format of cooking competition shows like Master Chef, employees and visitors stopped by to taste each dish and cast their vote.

The top healthy dish from each organization will now compete in a final round on Tuesday, March 29, at 110 Free Street in Portland. A caterer will prepare all of the winning recipes and attendees will vote for their favorite alongside a panel of special guest judges, including: Meredith Goad, food writer for the Portland Press Herald; Diane Atwood, author of the Catching Health blog and former Maine television health reporter; and Matt Ginn, executive chef at Evo Kitchen + Bar.

“Hospitals across the MaineHealth system have made excellent progress toward helping patients, employees, and communities make healthier food choice through the Partnership for a Healthier America’s Hospital Healthy Food Initiative,” said President Bill Caron. “The Food Fight was launched as a fun way to engage with local communities and employees across the MaineHealth system in recognition of these important efforts.”
