Family Medicine Residency

Residency Sites

Our Residency Program capitalizes on complementary educational experiences afforded by our three key sites: Maine Medical Center in Portland and the Family Medicine Centers in Falmouth and Portland. Residents do their inpatient rotations at MMC. Residents select one of the outpatient locations as their primary site for continuity patients and periodically see patients at the alternate site. Finally, we draw upon a variety of other institutions and settings for education, including Falmouth By-The-Sea Nursing Home, University of Southern Maine student health clinics, Portland Planned Parenthood and the offices of many local specialists.

Maine Medical Center

Newly partnered with Tufts to create the first allopathic medical school in Maine, Maine Medical Center has a long and rich history of medical education with eighteen accredited residency programs and fellowships. In this setting, family medicine residents learn from each other and from residents in other disciplines. They have ample opportunity to teach, working with medical students on all rotations. Maine Medical Center is a unique institution: a 606-bed comprehensive non-profit teaching hospital, it is the principal center for tertiary care for much of the State of Maine but functions and has the feel of a community hospital.

Family Medicine Center, Portland

An institution in Portland's East End, the Family Medicine Center opened its doors in 1974. Fittingly, 25 years later, we built a new Family Medicine Center on the site of our original practice. The new building accommodates 15 residents, 6 faculty and our Sports Medicine Fellowship. The Family Medicine Center has traditionally provided care for the area's underserved population, but also draws patients from a broader geographic area and with varied insurance coverage. We serve an increasing number of immigrants and refugees who add to the cultural diversity of our population base. Our patients have on-site access to social workers, a psychiatrist, lab, xray and a Learning Resource Center.

The Portland Family Medicine Center is open:
Monday through Thursday - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Family Medicine Center, Falmouth

The Falmouth Family Medicine Center provides community primary care and resident education. Opened in 1997, the Falmouth Family Health Center houses private physicians and residents in family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Also in this facility are a radiology suite, a physical therapy group, and a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Center for patients and others. A behavioral medicine group works collaboratively with the Family Medicine Center to improve the mental health needs of our patients. In the Family Medicine Center, Family Medicine Residency Program faculty and residents work together in patient care and resident education. Residents benefit from cross-disciplinary educational opportunities and collaboration with ancillary staff and other specialists. Falmouth is a suburb of Portland, with the primary care center located just off Interstate 295, an easy ten-minute drive from Portland.

The Family Medicine Center in Falmouth is open:
Monday through Friday - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
