 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction 


Join Mary Bitterauf, BS, CHES, for this eight-week course based on the program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. You will learn effective strategies for working with ongoing stress and chronic pain. Instruction will involve mindful meditation practices, discussion, gentle stretching and yoga appropriate for all ability levels. For more information on the science behind MBSR, click here.

MBSR Expectations: Practice & Learning Suggestions

The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program is an eight week course designed to teach people how to improve the way they care for themselves and how to participate fully in improving the health and quality of their lives as they work with various types of “stressors” that may be limiting the life that they would like to live. Before you enroll in the MBSR course we ask that you please consider the following time commitments:

  • Participants are asked for a commitment to attend all eight evening classes and one day-long Saturday retreat.
  • We encourage 45-60 minutes daily meditation at least six days per week for the full eight weeks. Your commitment is essential. It is the practice of mindfulness meditation that will enable you to realize its benefits. This commitment can be a challenging one, and may require a lifestyle change. You may have to rearrange your schedule to allow time for daily practice, carving out time from other activities. Once you taste the benefits of MBSR, then you may find that maintaining a daily practice becomes easier and highly rewarding.

MBSR: Wednesdays, August 27 - October 15, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m and Saturday, October 4, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Click here to register for this session.)

Intro to MBSR: October 7; 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (NOTE: Intro to MBSR is a prerequisite for MBSR.)

MBSR: Wednesdays, October 29 - December 17, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m and Saturday, December 6, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Intro to MBSR: January 7; 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. (NOTE: Intro to MBSR is a prerequisite for MBSR.)

MBSR: Wednesdays, January 21 - March 11, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m and Saturday, February 28, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

All classes are held at the Scarborough Learning Resource Center at 100 Campus Dr. The cost for the 8-week MBSR class is $250. (Partial scholarships are available.) Intro to MBSR is free. .
