Health Tip: Pay Attention While Walking

Avoid distractions

(HealthDay News) -- Walking while distracted can be as dangerous as distracted driving.

To avoid walking while distracted, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons advises:

  • If you're listening to a radio, phone or music player, lower the volume so you can hear surrounding noise and nearby traffic.
  • Move away from pedestrian traffic if you need to make a phone call or send a text.
  • Pay attention to any nearby obstacles or people.
  • Cross streets only at a crosswalk when it is safe to do so.
  • Carefully look up, especially when stepping off a curb, near stairs or when heading into an intersection.
  • Be aware of drivers and people in parking lots, particularly when it's dark and it's more difficult to see you.
