(HealthDay News) -- You may think it's attractive or cool to pierce your tongue, but you should be aware of the risks before the procedure.

The American Dental Association explains these potential risks:

  • Swelling that could impair breathing.
  • Cracking a tooth from biting down on a piercing.
  • Severe infection or pain.
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Nerve damage.
  • Excessive drooling.
