Western Maine Health welcomes first baby of 2008

NORWAY, ME –   Jessica Smith, 19, of Bethel escaped a driving snowstorm and arrived at Stephens Memorial Hospital in labor on December 31, 2007.   She delivered Western Maine Health’s first baby of 2008, Harlowe Leeann Smith, at 8:54 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Delivered by Dr. Gregory Hardy, Harlowe was two weeks early, weighed five pounds, two ounces, and measured 19 inches.

Harlowe is named after her great-great-grandfather, Linwood Harlo Bryant.  “I just changed the spelling a little,” Smith said.

Her middle name, Leeann, has roots in her family as well. Smith came up with Harlowe’s middle name from her grandmother, Bonnie Lee Harmon, and her mother, Lori Ann Smith.

Harlowe joins a large extended family that includes the aforementioned grandmother, Lori Ann Smith, and her husband, Ken Grover, of Bethel, her grandfather, Philip Smith Jr., of Jefferson, NH, an uncle, Ryan Smith, and cousin, Samantha Smith.

As part of the celebration, Stephens Memorial Hospital presented Jessica and baby Harlowe with a basket of welcome gifts donated by area businesses including: the Advertiser Democrat, Ari’s Pizza, Bee Scrappy, Books N Things, Café Nomad, Cattails, Curves, Flagship Cinemas, Hair and Company, LisAnna’s, Littlefield Greenhouses, LT’s, Main Street Furniture, Maine Made and More, Maurice Francais, Norway Savings Bank, Oxford Hannaford, PACE Paramedic Services, Perfect Stitch, Stephens Volunteer Services, and Subway.
