Improving Quality of Life for People Living with Diabetes

The Diabetes Education Program at Stephens Memorial Hospital is recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators and is staffed by a certified diabetes educator. Our mission is to improve the health care outcomes and quality of life for members of our community living with diabetes.

Our Diabetes Education Program Offers:

  • Diabetes self-management education
  • Insulin pump initiation and ongoing management
  • Continuous glucose monitors
  • Insulin and other injection training
  • Blood sugar meter training
  • Carbohydrate counting

Diabetes Self-Management

Whether your are newly diagnosed or have been living with diabetes for many years, our Diabetes Self-Management Education program will help you manage your condition and live a healthier lifestyle. We offer both one-day and multiple-class sessions. A physician referral is required. The program cost is usually covered by Medicare, MaineCare and private insurance. If you would like to participate, ask your doctor for a referral or call our department at 207-744-6057.

Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)

The DPP helps people lower their chance of developing type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, like heart disease or stroke. Designed for people who have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or who are at risk and want to make a healthy lifestyle change, this national program will help you eat healthier and become more active which may prevent diabetes.
