Urology | Urologist

Urology care helps patients with conditions involving the urinary tract, bladder and kidneys. The urologists at MaineHealth have experience and specialized training in diagnosing and treating adults and children with a wide range of urologic conditions. They also are experts in evaluating issues with the male reproductive organs.

Urologists work closely with nephrology doctors, or kidney care specialists.

Conditions treated

Urologists evaluate and treat urinary, bladder, kidney and prostate conditions. The area of urology care focuses on evaluation and treatment of a number of issues that include, but are not limited to:

  • Kidney stones
  • Erectile dysfunction and impotence
  • Incontinence
  • Urinary tract infections and diseases
  • Vasectomy and vasovasostomies (vasectomy reversal)
  • Male infertility
  • Bladder cancer
  • Overactive bladder
  • Prostate cancer
  • Enlarged prostate

Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are the most common urological issue. UTIs can be either a primary infection or an underlying symptom of other infections. Talk to your primary care provider if you think you have a UTI. Your provider can provide a diagnosis and treatment for a UTI.

Urology treatments

Urology procedures can often be done in the urologist’s office.

  • Cystoscopies allow your doctor to view the inside of your bladder and the tube (urethra) that takes urine out of your body. Doctors use a thin tube and a tiny camera. Cystoscopies often are done on an out-patient basis but also may be done in the hospital.

  • Robotic and laser surgeries allow urologists to use very small incisions with tiny instruments and magnified 3-D viewing.

  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) uses sound waves (shock waves) to treat stones in the urinary tract system. The procedure is painless.

Speak with your primary care provider if you believe specialized urology care is right for you.
