Urology Residency

The mission of the MMC Residency Program in Urology is to provide a rigorous and comprehensive postgraduate educational experience in the art and science of urology. The focus is clinically oriented with a strong foundation in all aspects of urology as well as quality and clinical outcomes research. After six months of general surgery, the four and a half clinical years are structured to provide the resident with didactic teaching sessions in the pathophysiology of urologic disease processes, a gradual increase in clinical decision-making and responsibility, and progressive teaching of all technical skills required to be a complete urologic surgeon.

The philosophical framework surrounding the residency is to foster an environment of inquisitiveness and study recognizing that urology is a surgical subspecialty with a strong tradition of innovation and technological advancement. The relationship between attending surgeons and residents is one of mentoring, rather than traditionally hierarchical, and the working environment is team-oriented. This includes daily attending participation, clinical teaching rounds, and a spirit of broad openness and discussions of how to best provide patient care and how to advance the delivery of urologic care.

It is the objective of this program to train the complete urologist. The MMC trained urologist should be expert in all technical aspects of urology, have the analytic skills to develop, execute, and interpret clinical studies, and be fully prepared for a non-academic or academic career path.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)

The Maine Medical Center Urology Residency Program faculty, staff, and learners believe that an inclusive and diverse work environment is an integral part of the foundation of a more equitable and just society. Our patient population includes people from around the globe, people who identify across the gender and sexuality spectrum, and people who come from every background and socioeconomic status. In an effort to provide better care and improve the health of our population, we include in our curriculum education, support, and conversations around topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We strive to recruit residents who embody diverse characteristics and grow with us to serve the patients of our state, country, and beyond. We also strive to create an environment of belonging. We are committed and devoted to anti-racism and anti-violence work. Current and future programming includes:

  • Commitment to recruitment and retention of diverse medical students, applicants, residents, and faculty;
  • Implicit bias training for application reviewers and candidate interviewers;
  • Holistic, unblinded review of applications with attention to life experience;
  • Supporting the Society of Academic Urologists’ stance on virtual interviews as a means of improving equity;
  • Didactic sessions to amplify the voices of immigrants and asylees, LGBTQI+, BIPOC, homeless, and marginalized populations;
  • Ongoing review and revision of curriculum with consideration to how our program amplifies diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Visiting Student Diversity Scholarship Program

The Department of Medical Education developed the Diversity Scholarship Award Program to help advance MaineHealth’s mission to actively pursue, and welcome a wide range of perspectives and backgrounds. We believe with this program, we will improve the academic environment, drive innovation and attract leadership – ultimately, enhancing our ability to train future medical providers to provide high quality, socially responsible and equitable care to all patients and their families.

MMC’s Department of Medical Education offers eight $500 scholarship awards per academic year for those applying to advanced electives with identities and backgrounds that are considered underrepresented in medicine. The AAMC has previously defined underrepresented in medicine as "those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." The Department of Medical Education endeavors for this to be an inclusive definition that is open to individual interpretation. Other examples may include physically disabled, economically disadvantaged, or LGBTQ+ students.

This scholarship award may be applied towards travel, housing and incidental expenses related to a month long visiting rotation. View the program overview to find out if you are eligible and to learn more about the application process. Questions?
